As a young boy I was fascinated with the thought of flying and becoming a pilot someday. While I was raised on a farm my Father never said, “This is where you belong, forget about that flying dream. You are the son of a farmer and that is the way it is.” My parents are like many, they worked very hard for what they had and they passed down that ethic to me as well. Every time I asked for something whether it was spending money, a bike, or a car their response was, “If you want it work for it.”
When I became a parent, I wanted to pass down that same work ethic to my girls. I struggled with finding the right words to try and explain the level of commitment needed to achieve their goals, then I remembered a story my grandfather told me in my early teens.
My grandfather one day asked, Mike “I hear you want to be a pilot when you finish school? That is a lofty goal. Are you the chicken or the pig?” I looked at my grandfather as a teenager would, but then asked, “What do you mean, Chicken or Pig?” My grandfather replied, “For Breakfast each day the Chicken is committed to you to provide two eggs. The Pig is dedicated to you to provide the bacon. Are you the Chicken or the Pig?” That story was a very profound one for me, it made me realize that commitment and dedications do not have the same meaning as I once thought. I choose the Pig and his dedication to become that pilot I dreamed of becoming and enjoyed a 35-year career living my passion.
In your endeavors are you the Chicken or the Pig?
